OVERVIEW:

The Boiler and Powerhouse Mechanic maintains the operating conditions of boiler and powerhouse, including the turbine generators and their auxiliary equipment, the salt water pumping station, the steam pressure reducing stations, condensate systems, electrical power distribution system and the compressed air systems.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic and pneumatic systems, pressure controls, valves, etc.
  • Maintains and repairs boilers, turbine generators, air compressors, RO unit, water softeners, air dryers and their components
  • Starts, stops and shifts service of all boiler and power machinery as required and receives fuel oil barges
  • Repairs shafts for all applications
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of material requirements
  • Installs bearings using specified type and size
  • Machines sprockets, repairs and replaces chains
  • Uses specified types and sizes of drive components for the job
  • Disassembles/assembles within specification all manner of gear reducers (spur, helical, double, and worm gears)
  • Fits and aligns couplings
  • Installs and adjusts belts, speed reducers, and motors
  • Inspects and determines the need for bearing and the seal replacement
  • Changes and aligns shafts, journals and antifriction bearings
  • Operates milling machines, key seater, drill press, hydraulic press, grinders and lathes
  • Performs tasks involving boring, turning, threading, cutting, and polishing
  • Works to the tolerance capacity of the machine, while utilizing the most efficient feeds and speeds
  • Produces finished work to a tolerance of +/- .005"
  • Repairs, maintains, overhauls, and installs centrifugal, gear, and metering pumps
  • Inspects and packs all pumps and maintains mechanical seals
  • Repairs and maintains metallic and non-metallic pipe and fittings
  • Installs, repairs and maintains valves, strainers, filters and traps
  • Runs pipe and tubing
  • Uses specified fluids
  • Installs, repairs and maintains cylinders and hoses

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs frequently
  • Must be able to reach and use arms in a repetitive motion frequently
  • Must be able to stand and walk constantly, bend and stoop occasionally
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces
  • Must be able to perform tasks wearing required PPE such as but not limited to protective footwear, clothing, safety glasses/goggles, etc.

 
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • At least two years work experience as a mechanic in a manufacturing environment
  • High School diploma or GED is required
  • Post high school technical training preferred.
