Reporting directly to the Sr. Manager of Packaging Engineering, the Packaging Engineer I will execute a variety of packaging Innovation & Renovation projects in support the objectives of the New Product Development (NPD) team. The ideal candidate must have the ability to work across a broad-range of packaging commodity types (e.g. poly film, corrugate, paperboard, etc.), ensure food safety, and provide value to the customer while controlling overall costs. The Packaging Engineer I works closely with internal customers across multiple locations & functional areas and will work with external suppliers toward the successful delivery of projects against businesses requirements. 



  • Simultaneously executes multiple Innovation & Renovation projects using an established stage gate process to achieve on-time business objectives.
  • Develops and executes packaging qualification plans, including plant trials; reports against predetermined key performance indicators to drive change management through the Operations/business.
  • Responsible for the creation and maintenance of packaging specifications within SAP
  • Identifies packaging-related waste and material standardization opportunities; implementing improvements when supported by a business case.
  • Provides technical expertise to multiple functional areas (including but not limited to Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Sales & Marketing) to overcome business challenges
  • Challenges conventional thinking on packaging-related subjects by implementing creative solutions to continuous improvement activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s degree in Package Science or a related field from an accredited university
  • 0 to 2 years of experience working directly with package development
  • Basic knowledge of a broad range of packaging materials and packaging equipment commonly found within the Food and Beverage or CPG Industries
  • Fundamental project management skills; demonstrated ability to manage & deliver against multiple objectives
  • Ability to successfully execute problem-solving abilities and exhibit sound judgment and decision-making skills supported by technical justification
  • Proficiency speaking/reading/writing in other languages such as Spanish or Portuguese is highly preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to apply critical thinking strategies when translating customer needs/insights to viable packaging concepts
  • Ability to analyze complex information and perform root cause analysis
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook on an Advanced Level



  • Experience working in the Food and Beverage or CPG Industry is preferred
  • Advanced degree is a plus

  • This position will require travel both domestically and internationally; travel frequency will be based on the needs of the business (approximately 25-30% of the time)
