OVERVIEW

The Principal Research Scientist, NPD must be able to technically lead new product innovation, coach and develop other scientists to drive technical capability, and successfully develop, execute complex NPD projects within the organization (global and local). The individual will independently research, design, conduct experiments, gather data, develop preliminary findings, assess technical feasibility and prepare written reports to drive new/improved products, cost savings and technologies.  They will identify project barriers and recommend technical solutions to key initiatives and be viewed as a technical expert with both internal and external customers. This individual will lead and direct the work of other scientists to achieve their primary responsibility of developing new products to meet the company’s objectives. 

 

DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads the development of product platforms as either continuous improvement opportunities or new innovations to continue growing the product development pipeline
  • Defines the critical product attributes and establishes specification ranges to deliver performance and value for customers and consumers, while maximizing business impact.
  • Leverages creative problem solving to provides solutions to complex challenges, while employing the use of analytics to drive decision making
  • Continuously improves the technical capability of the group by assessing current capabilities, keeping informed of new and existing technical methods, aligning next steps, implementing new capabilities, and training other scientists.
  • Identifies opportunities for competitive market advantage within or outside of existing portfolio, provides insights and direction to marketing, sales, operations and customers for new products and technologies that drive product portfolio and strategic vision.
  • Effectively uses technical and business acumen to explain concepts to technical and non-technical audiences, tailoring communications to meet diverse needs. Acts as a technical consultant for the company, customers, and external associations, and is able to troubleshoot processes (Manufacturing / NPD Laboratory / Pilot Plant) to find solutions to problems.
  • Establishes themselves as a subject matter expert within sweetening market and has opportunities to represent ASR Group through trade shows, expos, media, and PR events
  • Develops and implements projects while preserving a safe and accident-free laboratory and pilot environment.
  • Documents processes and procedures in electronic notebooks, prepares technical reports, and develops product specifications for approval by Product Development, QA, and Regulatory.
  • Complies with GMP/GLP rules and regulations while conducting experiments and trials with a safe quality mindset. 

 

WORK EXPERIENCES

  • 10+ years of experience working directly within Product Development; Work experience in product development or process engineering within consumer goods industry is essential.
  • An extensive knowledge of DOE, analytical and physical testing methodologies within food industry, such as moisture, color, rheology, and spectroscopy are preferred.
  • Leverages extensive knowledge of sweeteners and sweetener systems.
  • Possess leadership skills to proactively deliver technical solutions to solve business and market issues.
  • Demonstrates ability to propose and persuade new research direction that addresses the business needs of the Company.
  • Has the ability to communicate well and to effectively influence and interact with others to accomplish research goals.
  • Can deal with ambiguity and complexity; and will assess risk prior to making decisions when not all information is provided.
  • Experienced in presenting to broader groups (e.g., internal cross functional teams and external customers) including R&D leadership.
  • Possess excellent overall computer skills in all MS Office products suite such as Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, Project, Teams and Power Point. 
  • Adaptable and able to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Has experience and understanding of the stage/gate process in Project management and can lead others in delivering multiple parallel work streams to successfully deliver NPD projects.
  • Project management experience required.
  • Familiar with Genesis or similar software preferred. Compusense Sensory Software a plus.
  • Experience with SAP PLM preferred.

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Chemistry or Agriculture - Science/Technology/Engineering or related field is essential. M.S. is preferred.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • This role requires the coaching of a team of 3-4 Research Scientists/Lab Technicians but does not have direct line management responsibility.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Less than 10% travel for business meetings; travel frequency will be minimal and will be based on business needs.
