Packing Engineer

POSITION SCOPE

To support the optimisation and technical improvement of an area of the packaging operations. To identify and manage medium sized projects in own area of responsibility, or work as part of a larger project team. To stand in for the Packaging Team Manager during holiday/absence as required.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Assist in managing the technical and plant related aspects of Safety, Hygiene, Environment and Quality consistent with TALS procedures and targets to achieve continuous improvement and to meet legislative and regulatory compliance.
  • Development of systems to measure key plant technical performance and output
  • Identify projects to enhance safety, de-bottleneck and improve technical performance / reduce costs.
  • Lead and assist in coordinating problem solving effort requiring technical input.
  • Identify non-optimal plant operations (including use of utilities/energy, sugar loss, material waste) and work with the operations/engineering teams to improve packaging/process operation.
  • Contribute to the maintenance plan for an area in terms of assisting in the prioritization of work to maximize benefit.
  • Provide guidance to the Shift and Packaging Team Managers on the most appropriate ways to react to particular operational and technical issues.
  • Work with the shift supervisors to improve the way that operating problems are dealt with and implement corrective actions to ensure no future failures – 100 year fix
  • Develop systems to monitor plant performance – attainment, OEE, std efficiency, pareto charts, uptime charts
  • Manage medium sized projects (up to £100k) and lead on commissioning activities
  • Work as packaging engineer on larger projects and provide a liaison between projects and production; from design concept through to implementation
  • Update and develop key documentation including Process Narratives, P&ID’s, Work Instructions, Changeover Procedures, and TBRAs.
  • Integration of a multi -skilled workforce through the implementation of a robust training regime including coaching/mentoring and performance management by working closely with the shift supervisors and packaging team managers
  • Work with the production planning team to ensure the best mode of operation is followed (reducing changeovers, prioritization of SKUs at risk)

 

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

  • Improved hygiene in area of responsibility as measured by GMP audits.
  • Improved technical performance in area of responsibility (e.g. OEE, Std Efficiency, Attainment, Sucrose Loss)
  • Improve line uptime in area of responsibility with clear directions to the operational teams on expectations and standards
  • Deliver agreed projects on time, within scope and on budget.
  • Demonstration of compliance with all SHEQ standards at all times
  • Successful implementation of systems to improve efficiency within packing

DESIRED WORK EXPERIENCES

  • Relevant experience in a large food processing or similar manufacturing operation, to include:
  • Knowledge of safety management systems such as risk assessment, safety auditing, permits to work etc.;
  • Project team experience; 
  • Some understanding of automatic control systems; 
  • Good technical understanding of process flows and unit operations;
  • Understanding of quality management systems such as ISO 9002 and HACCP;
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
  • Team working nature combined with team leading potential.
  • Effective co-ordination skills.
  • Ability to work complex situations with minimum referral to manager.
  • Good at working as part of a team and as an individual.
  • Self-motivated with a desire for personal development

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Educated to degree level, preferably in Mechanical/Chemical/Manufacturing engineering
