OVERVIEW

The Senior Corporate Packaging Engineer provides project design and technical expertise in supporting ASR Group's strategic goals and objectives to be a world-class sugar refiner. This position supports the strategic goal of improving our packing capability and transforming our company into a more value added product mix away from bulk commodities. This positon involves the design of packaging lines from concept through to the completion of the installation and commissioning phases.

 

The Senior Corporate Packaging Engineer will work with contracted engineering resources toward development and execution of packaging capital projects.  Projects assigned to this position are of considerable variety and complexity and are accomplished with collaboration and coordination with all facets of the organization. A strong project design background and excellent interpersonal skills are critical to this role.

 

DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The primary contribution of the Senior Corporate Packaging Engineer is to work with engineering and consulting resources to develop and execute packaging projects from the conceptual phase through the execution and commissioning phases. In this role, the engineer will work closely with engineering firms to develop designs, equipment layouts, define scope(s) of work, and design specifications for the equipment as well as develop project budgets. Working with outside engineering resources and the project execution team, the engineer will act as a technical resource during the construction and commissioning phases of the project. This is a hands-on role that will require effective interfacing with outside engineering resources, the procurement team, project engineering, operations, suppliers, customers, and OEMs, as well as cross-functional internal teams that may be global in makeup and responsibility.

 

  • The Sr. Corporate Packaging Engineer is also a technical resource and subject matter expert for refinery packaging departments. He/she will work with dry food packaging operations to include, but not limited to the following packaging equipment: vertical form fill fillers, baggers, sealers, scales, labelers, case formers/loaders, conveyers, palletizers and robotics.

 

WORK EXPERIENCES

  • 7-10+ years of hands-on experience in the completion of packaging projects and working with packaging lines design and installation
  • Experience working with outside engineering resources to deliver capital packaging projects
  • Demonstrated experience in selecting and applying sound engineering practices and principles to the design and development of high volume consumer packaged goods (CPG)
  • Previous job experience in food industry is a plus
  • GMP Practices, Sanitary Design, and OSHA regulations knowledge is highly preferred

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a concentration in Packaging Science, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical or related engineering field from an accredited university

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • Direct Supervision of one Packaging Engineer will eventually be part of this role.  This role will also provide  project related leadership, direction and guidance as part of the general scope of work

 

ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES)

  • Manage outside engineering resources in the development of capital packaging projects
  • Overall project design including machinery specifications, line design, working with the project execution team develop costs and project schedule
  • Develops, prepares and/or assembles the engineering package/project documentation for each assigned project. This includes designs, calculations, layouts, schematics, manuals, bid specifications, etc
  • Working with the Project Engineer develop project budgets, schedules, and prepare project justification and develop capital requests, including monthly forecast project spending plan
  • Communicates all appropriate information in a timely manner and fashion to the necessary people within and outside the organization
  • Assists the Project Team in the development of new projects. Works with outside engineering resources, Operations and Project Team to evaluate designs and recommend improvements
  • Works closely with purchasing/procurement and operations groups per established standards. This includes reviewing potential vendors, contracts with vendors/contractors, selecting equipment, sign off on all preconstruction drawings, issuing purchase requisitions, mange change orders, schedule and attend FAT’s , coordinate payments, and shipment/delivery, schedule commissioning/ vendor on site visits
  • Assists with installation, checkout, start-up and training as necessary. Works with the project team and operations to facilitate effective handoff to respective Operations’ personnel
  • Serve as an effective team member in assessing and improving current packaging operations, implementing and introducing new technologies, providing recommendations for retrofits and new equipment
  • Interfaces with people, departments, and/or companies to insure that equipment is safe, made on schedule and to specification
  • Assures projects are constructed and executed in accordance with company standards, regulatory agency codes and guidelines (GMP/SQF/ OSHA)
  • Participates in the generation of the annual capital plan and the development of 1-5 years plans for key packaging assets
  • Works to establish pro-active relationships with key vendors, to help develop technological improvements to our manufacturing equipment. Supports the division wide initiative to standardize equipment, technology, processes and practices across refinery/packaging operations
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  •  Strong communication, both verbal and written, and team skills necessary in working with company personnel, equipment suppliers, contractors and in sharing project information with internal departments
  • Effective technical and engineering skills
  • Controls and Power System knowledge is a plus (PLCs, Drives, HMI Software, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft software, including Word, Excel and Project. Proficiency using AutoCAD and drafting principles is must
  • Strong organizational, presentation, problem solving and interpersonal skills to effectively contribute to executing projects
  • Strong knowledge of engineering concepts and practices as they relate to packaging equipment and line design
  • Demonstrated ability in performing cost/benefit analysis; facilitate and/or influence a team to a recommended path forward
  • Ability to travel when necessary, domestic and international
