OVERVIEW

The Maintenance Supervisor of the Pipe & Welding Shop is responsible for directing and coordinating the maintenance operations, with specific focus on piping, tanks, valves, heat exchangers, plumbing, and metalworking functions to meet objectives in quality, reliability, safety, costs and on-time delivery.  The Maintenance Supervisor drives a culture of safety by leading by example, setting expectations and standards, and reinforcing positive behavior during the course of daily business.  Responsibilities span all phases of maintenance, including planning, parts procurement, repairs, troubleshooting, upgrades, improvements, scheduling, preventive maintenance and maintenance planning.  This individual recognizes areas of need and develops action plans to correct issues ultimately leading to successful efforts to correct identified needs.

 

DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directs the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment by eliminating hazards, training employees, and promoting safety awareness throughout the facility
  • Takes corrective action to reduce safety risks, maintenance problems and/or waste in order to maximize continuous availability of refinery equipment.
  • Reviews, approves, schedules, and closes out maintenance work orders.  Provides resources and inspects work in progress and after completion for accuracy and timeliness. Documents the work complete and maintains records for future reference.
  • Coordinates daily maintenance work to ensure maximum equipment up-time while utilizing the available equipment, tools, materials, and manpower. Prepares shop schedules and assigns work to direct reports, including briefing the work scope and hazard mitigation. Controls labor cost by taking all opportunities to perform work on straight time and minimize overtime work.
  • Ensure large tooling such as welding machines and man lifts are in good working order.
  • Monitors maintenance tasks to ensure compliance with quality and GMP requirements.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of department records on all equipment and company property.
  • Interfaces with outside vendors for equipment and parts purchases. Collects technical data on equipment to be used for modification or replacement. Submit proposals for new equipment or part purchase.
  • Reviews costs and takes action to eliminate or minimize unnecessary spending including consumption of supplies and machine parts.
  • Supervise special maintenance/engineering projects and ensure highest level of workmanship. Assists in the preparation and completion of technical and non-technical documents, training, production, and maintenance procedures, drawing packages, and other related documentation for the project.
  • Evaluates all welding performed in the Refinery
  • Ensures that all areas and equipment are maintained in good housekeeping condition.
  • Reviews time cards for accuracy.
  • Conducts daily safety contacts and monthly safety meetings.
  • Prepares and tracks scheduling and cost of expenditures for contracted and major maintenance projects.
  • Assists the Reliability Engineer/Planner in the development of the Weekend Shutdown Maintenance Work plan and other outage plans as required.
  • Maintains records of fire protection system inspections from external vendors.
  • Ensures compliance of all Company policies and procedures.

 

WORK EXPERIENCES

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of  various types of mechanical and operational equipment
  • Extensive welding experience is required  
  • Two to three years of supervisory experience is preferred

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • A High School diploma or GED is required

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • Responsible for the direct supervision, training, scheduling, direction, deployment and safety of a pipefitters, iron workers, and mechanical contractors within a union environment
  • Provides occasional relief supervision to other maintenance shops

 

ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES)

  • Must have strong background in mechanical maintenance, welding, and pipefitting
  • Prior experience with the successful implementation of modifications and/or upgrades to increase maintenance reliability
  • Intermediate computer skills with experience in Microsoft Office is required
  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system will be required; SAP experience is preferred
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office is necessary; basic operation of general office equipment
  • Must have a high level of communication skills, including the ability to write reports
  • Ability to work occasional overtime on weekdays and weekends
