OVERVIEW
The Senior Corporate Controls Engineer is responsible for technical leadership, design, and execution of industrial control systems and automation initiatives across American Sugar Holdings manufacturing facilities. This role provides expertise in PLC, DCS, SCADA, MES, and OT systems, supporting plant safety, reliability, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and capacity expansion across the entirety of the manufacturing network. The position leads the controls and automation scope for medium- to large-scale capital projects, including greenfield and brownfield implementations. The Senior Corporate Controls Engineer works closely with Project Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, IT, and external system integrators, providing hands-on technical leadership through design, implementation, commissioning, and startup. This role may mentor junior engineers and contractors but does not have direct supervisor responsibility.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university or
- 8‑10 years in process automation and controls
PREFERRED EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, or Computer Engineering
- Experience in batch or continuous chemical processes
- Familiarity with OSHA PSM regulated environments
- Experience with scripting or data tools (Python, SQL) applied to OT systems
ESSENTIAL SYSTEM CAPABILITIES AND SKILLS
- Hands-on experience with PLC and DCS platforms (Rockwell Automation / ControlLogix, Siemens PCS7).
- Proficiency with Rockwell Controllers, Wonderware Systems Platform, and Inductive Automation Ignition.
- Experience with SCADA systems and data historians.
- Strong understanding of industrial networking, instrumentation, and control system architectures.
- Proven ability to lead controls scope on complex capital projects.
- Knowledge of AI and ML concepts with practical experience integrating advanced analytics or intelligent functionality into control systems.
- Strong analytical skills with keen attention to detail and advanced problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, IT, and vendors.
DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the design, development, and implementation of PLC, DCS, SCADA, and MES systems in support of capital projects and plant improvements.
- Define and maintain control system architectures, including networks, hardware standards, and software platforms.
- Develop and review control narratives, functional specifications, IO lists, and system architecture documents.
- Provide technical oversight for panel design, system integration, FAT/SAT, commissioning, startup, and lifecycle support.
- Own the controls and automation scope typically ranging from $250k to $5M+.
- Collaborate with Project Engineers and Project Managers on scope definition, schedules, cost estimates, and risk mitigation.
- Identify automation, operability, cybersecurity, and maintainability risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Support procurement activities including equipment specification, vendor evaluation, and system integrator oversight.
- Integrate control systems with SCADA, MES, data historians, ERP, and laboratory systems as required.
- Leverage existing automation and OT data to improve monitoring, diagnostics, reliability, and performance.
- Ensure compliance with ASR engineering standards, ISA standards, electrical codes, cybersecurity requirements, and site safety policies.
- Support projects subject to OSHA PSM, environmental regulations, and internal compliance requirements.
- Actively participate in plant safety programs and process safety initiatives.
- Drive standardization, reuse, and continuous improvement of control system designs and practices.
- Mentor junior engineers and support development of technical capability across sites.

SALARY RANGE
- $93,000 - $172,000
