OVERVIEW

The Senior Regional Environmental Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for environmental compliance and risk management across North America under the direction of the Environmental Director. This role ensures adherence to federal, state (provincial), and local environmental regulations while driving continuous improvement in environmental performance, best practices, and culture. The position partners closely with site leadership, legal, corporate EHS, and external agencies to reduce environmental risk and support business objectives. The role will manage, develop, mentor and support the environmental managers at each refinery.  The ideal candidate will take initiative to solve complex challenges and have a strong ability to think laterally to deliver solutions.

 

 

DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Standardize and deploy environmental programs, policies, and procedures across sites
  • Develop and execute regional environmental strategies aligned with corporate EHS goals
  • Lead regional compliance with environmental regulations including air, water, waste, chemical management, spill prevention, and permitting
  • Interpret evolving regulatory requirements (EPA, state/provincial agencies, local authorities)
  • Oversee permit acquisitions, renewals, reporting, and project commitments
  • Ensure corrective actions are completed and sustained following audits and inspections
  • Oversees site level community development to respond to and protect company interests through implementation of agreements, measures and/or solutions that ensure our continued ability to operate and maintain compliance with our site environmental permits.
  • Support employee Environmental engagement efforts including oversight of EHS Committee
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the environmental manager at each of the refineries
  • Influence site leadership and foster accountability without direct authority
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate environmental risks
  • Provide technical support and guidance for large capital projects or complex compliance challenges
  • Lead/participate in environmental audits, gap assessments, and management reviews
  • Collaborate with Legal, Procurement, and Operations teams
  • Participate in project review meetings to ensure environmental concerns have been addressed
  • Track performance against environmental goals and metrics and identify trends and solutions
  • Provide interim coverage as needed to cover vacation and/or absence of Site Environmental Managers
  • Support and provide guidance during emergency response efforts as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field.  An advanced degree is preferred but not required.
  • 10+ years of progressive environmental compliance experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • 5+ years managing multi‑site or regional environmental programs
  • Strong leadership, influencing, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage complex, cross‑functional initiatives

 

 

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY

  • Manages staff comprised of 4-10 salaried employees
  • Review performance and identify training needs

 

 

LOCATION OF ROLE/TRAVEL

  • This role can be based near any of our U.S. refineries: either in Baltimore, MD; Chalmette, LA; or Crockett, CA.
  • Approximately 15-30% travel to ASR North America locations (Crockett, CA; Baltimore, MD; Chalmette, LA; and Toronto, Canada).

 

 

SALARY PAY RANGE

  • If based in Baltimore or Chalmette: $119,000-$221,000
  • If based in Crockett, CA: $130,000-$241,000

    The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on the candidate's qualifications and prior experience. Benefits include health care (medical, dental, vision, prescription drugs) available the first of the month following 30 days of employment: 401(k) with match, life insurance, AD&D, short term disability, vacation, holiday and sick time.
