Environmental Engineer

OVERVIEW

The Junior Environment Engineer supports the Environment Department in maintaining environmental compliance and improving the site’s environmental performance. Working under the guidance of the Environment Department Manager, the role collects and analyses environmental data, supports monitoring and reporting activities, contributes to projects and helps embed good environmental practices across the refinery.

DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support the implementation and maintenance of the site environmental management system, procedures and records.
• Collect, validate and analyse environmental data relating to water, wastewater, emissions, waste, energy and other relevant site indicators.
• Prepare routine environmental reports, dashboards and supporting documentation for internal review and external submissions, under supervision.
• Assist with environmental monitoring, sampling programmes and inspections, coordinating with approved laboratories and service providers where required.
• Support compliance with environmental permits, licences, legal requirements and corporate standards, escalating risks or deviations promptly.
• Maintain organised and accurate records of permits, monitoring results, waste documentation, inspections, incidents and corrective actions.
• Participate in internal and external audits and inspections, supporting evidence gathering, action tracking and timely closure of findings.
• Assist in investigating environmental incidents, complaints and non-conformities, using fact-based problem solving and supporting corrective and preventive actions.
• Provide environmental input to operational changes, maintenance activities and projects, with guidance from the Environment Department Manager.
• Support initiatives to prevent pollution, reduce waste and resource consumption, improve water and energy efficiency and strengthen environmental performance.
• Work collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Health & Safety and other functions to complete environmental actions.
• Prepare clear communications, awareness materials and training support on environmental requirements and good practices.
• Monitor relevant regulatory and technical developments and share identified implications with the Environment Department Manager.
• Promote a strong culture of environmental responsibility, quality, food safety and occupational health and safety.
• Participate in continuous improvement activities and carry out other reasonable duties within the scope of the role.

WORK EXPERIENCES

• Entry-level role.
• Internship, academic project or up to two years of experience in environmental engineering, industrial environmental management, sustainability or a related area is an advantage.
• Exposure to a manufacturing, processing, food production or other regulated industrial environment is preferred.
• Experience handling technical data, preparing reports or working with environmental monitoring information is an advantage.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related scientific or engineering discipline. 
• Knowledge of Portuguese and European environmental requirements applicable to industrial operations is preferred. 
• Training or practical knowledge of environmental management systems, including ISO 14001, is an advantage.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS 

• Fluent Portuguese, written and spoken. 
• Good working proficiency in English, written and spoken. 

LOCATION OF ROLE 

• Sidul Refinery, Lisbon, Portugal.
• This role is 100% site-based and requires daily presence in operational areas. Remote or hybrid working is not available for this position. Occasional travel may be required for training, audits, or visits to other locations.
