OVERVIEW
The Field Technician- Plant Tissue Culture position will be responsible for supporting the acclimatization, nursery management, and field establishment of tissue‑cultured sugarcane plantlets. This role will ensure that plantlets transitioning from the laboratory to nursery and field conditions maintain high survival rates, strong vigor, and varietal integrity to support the production of healthy seed cane. The technician will also conduct field planting of tissue‑culture plants, perform nursery quality checks, and carry out additional duties as assigned by the manager.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Associate degree an accredited tertiary institution in Agriculture, Crop Production, Plant Science, or a related field.
- Minimum 1–3 years of experience in a nursery, seed can, or agricultural field operations.
- Experience with sugarcane or vegetatively propagated crops is an asset.
- Knowledge of plant propagation, familiarity and exposure to tissue cultured plants and clean seed production is desirable but not mandatory.
- Familiarity with pest and disease control practices, safety protocols, and stewardship requirements.

- High attention to accuracy, detail, and data integrity.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Able to work safely, under pressure, and meet tight reporting deadlines.
- Comfortable with predominantly outdoor and nursery‑based work.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, and prolonged standing.
- Willingness to work in conditions involving heat, noise, chemicals, and required PPE use.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Maintain nursery conditions, including shade, irrigation, temperature, humidity, and sanitation.
- Monitor plantlet health, growth, and survival rates during acclimatization.
- Assist with field planting and support land preparation, spacing, and planting layout according to agronomic standards.
- Monitor field performance, including plant emergence, vigor, pest and disease incidence, and varietal purity.
- Maintain accurate records of plantlet numbers received, survival rates, and field performance.
- Enforce biosecurity and sanitation measures in nursery and field operations.
- Operate and maintain basic nursery and field equipment (irrigation systems, sprayers, hand tools).
- Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures.
