OVERVIEW

 

 

The Greenhouse Grower- Plant Tissue Culture will be responsible for acclimatizing and supporting the early growth of tissuecultured sugarcane plantlets under controlled greenhouse conditions, ensuring a healthy transition from laboratory to field. It involves field planting, nursery quality control, and performing additional duties as assigned.

 

 

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Associate degree from an accredited tertiary institution in Agriculture, Crop Production, Plant Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 1–3 years’ experience in a greenhouse or nursery crop production.
  • Experience with tissue-cultured plants or sugarcane is a strong advantage
  • Knowledge of plant propagation, irrigation, and fertility management.
  • Familiar with IPM principles, including scouting and application of chemicals.

 

Skills and Competencies: 

  • Good understanding of greenhouse crop management and plant physiology.
  • Ability to monitor and adjust environmental controls to maintain optimal growing conditions.
  • High attention to accuracy, detail, and data integrity, with the ability to work under sterile conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fastpaced environment.
  • Physically capable of working in warm, humid environments with tasks involving lifting, bending, and prolonged standing.
  • Ability to work safely under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and adhere to hygiene and safety standards (including exposure to chemicals with PPE).

 

 Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Receive tissue‑cultured plantlets and oversee weaning and acclimatization
  • Manage greenhouse environmental conditions
  • Inspect plants regularly for pests, diseases, and physiological disorders
  • Ensure varietal integrity and traceability
  • Plan greenhouse production schedules
  • Prepare plantlets for transfer to nursery or field
  • Maintain accurate records of plant numbers, growth stages, survival rates, and input usage.
  • Adhere to health, safety, and environmental standards, including safe handling of fertilizers and agrochemicals.
