The Harvester/Heavy Duty Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a harvester machine used in the cutting of green or burnt sugar cane, as well as other heavy-duty equipment such as tractor trucks, loaders, and bulldozers. The role also requires a working knowledge of the mechanical functions of these machines, including basic parts identification, routine maintenance, and minor repairs.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred
  • Certification or training in heavy equipment or agricultural machinery is an asset
  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience operating harvesting or heavy agricultural equipment is preferred
  • Valid driver’s license; Class E or heavy-duty equipment is an asset

 

Skills and Competencies: 

  • Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to identify and respond to routine machine-related issues effectively
  • Capacity to perform physically demanding tasks and work under unusual or high-pressure conditions, including repairs to critical machine components
  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials required for the safe and effective operation of machinery
  • Excellent communication and observation skills
  • Ability to motivate others and foster effective teamwork

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Operate the tractors in a safe and efficiently manner.
  • Ensure to follow all instructions and procedures given by the supervisors and do an excellent job.
  • Communicate at all times with the supervisors and mechanics for the repairs and maintenance of the machines. Report any mechanical failure immediately to the supervisors.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient work environment
  • Provide support for other agricultural team activities as required, including cane burning, in-field harvesting assistance, and water transportation
  • Demonstrate punctuality by reporting to the workplace and assigned transportation pickup location on time
  • Take responsibility for the equipment being operated by conducting a thorough inspection and verifying the machine’s condition before use
  • Complete the tractor and checklist log on a daily basis at the end of each work shift.
