The Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic is responsible for conducting diagnostics and performing preventive maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on agricultural heavy equipment and related machinery, including diesel engines, harvesters, tractors, transport vehicles, and hydraulic systems. The position supports maximum equipment availability, reliability, and operational efficiency during both crop and out-of-crop periods.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A High School Diploma in vocational/technical studies or a certificate in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment mechanics, automotive technology, or related technical field
- Technical/vocational training in heavy-duty maintenance is an asset
- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in heavy equipment or diesel mechanic work
- Experience working on agricultural equipment and sugar cane harvesters is highly preferred
- Experience with hydraulic systems, welding and electrical troubleshooting is an advantage
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
- Physically demanding work, including lifting heavy components and prolonged standing
- Skilled in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical faults.
- Familiarity with agricultural and off-road equipment.
- Ability to operate workshop tools, diagnostic equipment, and lifting devices.
- Good problem-solving and time management skills.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet operational demands.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical faults on heavy agricultural equipment and diesel-powered machinery.
- Carry out engine rebuilds, transmission repairs, brake repairs, steering repairs, and suspension work.
- Repair and maintain hydraulic cylinders, pumps, valves, hoses, and fittings.
- Execute scheduled preventive maintenance programs according to manufacturer and company standards.
- Inspect machinery regularly to identify wear, defects, or safety issues.
- Maintain and repair sugar cane harvesters, including cutter systems, feed rollers, elevator systems, choppers, hydraulic controls, base cutters, and fan systems.
- Where possible, use diagnostic tools, manuals, and computerized systems to identify faults.
- Troubleshoot diesel injection systems, electronic controls, sensors, and engine management systems.
- Follow all workplace safety procedures and company policies.
- Ensure proper use of PPE, tools, lifting equipment, and machinery.
- Assist in identifying and requesting spare parts and workshop materials.
- Assist apprentices and junior mechanics with technical guidance.
