The Tractor Operator will be responsible for operating tractors to carry out a variety of agricultural tasks, including ploughing, bush hogging, transporting trailers, and towing hi-tip wagons for cane loading operations. During mechanical harvesting, the Tractor Operator works alongside the harvester using a tractor with a hi-tip wagon to facilitate the loading and transport of billeted cane.
Qualifications and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred
- Certification or training in heavy equipment or agricultural machinery is an asset
- Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience operating harvesting or heavy agricultural equipment is preferred
- Valid driver’s license; Class E or heavy-duty equipment is an asset
Skills and Competencies:
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to identify and respond to routine mechanical issues affecting equipment
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work under atypical conditions, including repairs to critical machine components
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials required for machine operation
- Ability to work in a safe, clean, and efficient manner
- Strong observation and attention-to-detail skills
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Operate tractors in a safe and efficient manner
- Follow all instructions, procedures, and guidelines provided by supervisors to ensure work is completed to a high standard
- Maintain clear communication with supervisors and mechanics regarding machine maintenance and repairs, and report any mechanical faults immediately
- Assist with routine tractor maintenance, including blowing radiators and greasing hi-tip wagons
- Conduct routine and scheduled machine inspections before operation
- Complete the tractor checklist and daily log at the end of each work shift
- Use the required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times while operating machinery
- Participate in meetings organized by supervisors and contribute feedback, comments, and suggestions related to operations
