OVERVIEW
A Tractor Trailer Operator (TTO) is responsible for safely operating heavy‑duty tractor‑trailer trucks to transport freight, materials, or equipment between facilities, distribution centers, or customer locations. This role requires strong driving skills, attention to safety, and the ability to manage time‑sensitive deliveries.

 

Key Responsibilities
•     Operate tractor‑trailer vehicles to transport goods over local, regional, or long‑distance routes.
•     Inspect vehicles before and after trips, ensuring mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
•     Secure cargo according to safety regulations and company standards.
•     Maintain accurate logs, including hours of service, mileage, fuel usage, and delivery documentation.
•     Follow all DOT regulations, traffic laws, and company safety policies.
•     Communicate with dispatchers regarding schedules, delays, or issues during transport.
•     Perform minor vehicle maintenance or report mechanical problems promptly.
•     Load and unload freight, sometimes using forklifts or pallet jacks depending on the employer.
•     Represent the company professionally when interacting with customers or facility personnel.

Qualifications
•     Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)—typically Class A.
•     Clean driving record and ability to meet DOT medical requirements.
•     Experience operating tractor‑trailers (often 1–2 years preferred).
•     Knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations.
•     Ability to lift and move freight as required.
•     Strong time‑management and communication skills.

Working Conditions
•     May involve long hours, overnight travel, or weekend/holiday schedules.
•     Exposure to varying weather conditions.
•     Extended periods of sitting and driving.
•     Physical activity during loading/unloading.
