OVERVIEW:

 

ASR Group has ambition to be the most sustainable sugar refining business in the world. Consistent with this mission, the Company has resources that encourage and enable Sustainable Development activities and assurances. This Sustainability Engineer position will report directly to the site Plant Manager and has dotted line relationships with the Vice President of Sustainability and the VP of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). 

 

 

The person in this role will be responsible for supporting the site leadership team in finalizing the unit’s Sustainability Framework and executing the resulting short- and long-term strategy to show progress on sustainability KPIs, ultimately driving toward our collective environmental goals and social responsibilities commitments. The focus will be on instilling a culture of sustainability in the organization in collaboration with and support from muti-disciplinary and department teams including operations, supply chain, human resources & legal. The position will also aid in internal and external communications with stakeholders, while developing and advancing corporate social responsibilities and employees’ engagement and awareness programs.  The Sustainability Engineer may also be called upon to lead interactions and communications with community interest groups, contractors, and consultants, at the direction of the Sustainability leadership.  

 

 

 

 

DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Strategy & Planning:

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and implementation of the site’s Sustainability Framework and Level 2 Sustainability Plan, ensuring alignment with ASR Group corporate objectives and site-specific targets.
  • Act as a change agent, promoting a culture of sustainability and continuous improvement throughout the site, as directed by plant managers and regional leadership.

Data & Reporting:

  • Collect, validate, and analyse sustainability data, identifying opportunities for improvement and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of outcomes.
  • Communicate findings and progress to internal and external stakeholders, including site managers, corporate sustainability leadership, and relevant departments, using appropriate reporting platforms.
  • Ensure regular tracking, reporting, and documentation of sustainability KPIs in accordance with ASR Group governance, policy, and document retention requirements.

 

Project Implementation & Continuous Improvement:

  • Participate in (if lead by another department) or develop, oversee, and implement sustainable development projects to reduce resource consumption, minimise environmental impact, and advance site sustainability objectives.
  • Foster and ensure effective communication on how project efforts are contributing to the site’s individual budget and stretch targets in any given year and how the relate to the Group targets, such as 50% GHG emissions reduction by 2030 (vs 2012 baseline), progressing towards site GHG emission neutrality by 2040, and the “Net Zero” ambition by 2050.
  • Implement technical solutions for medium- and long-term sustainability challenges, including water usage reduction, waste management and resource circularity, and carbon market validations and certification, in partnership with subject matter experts.
  • Engage proactively in securing sustainable development incentives or funding to mitigate financial risks associated with sustainability innovations.

 

Collaboration & Leadership:

  • Champion cross-departmental collaboration, driving collective action through engineering optimisation, waste mitigation, and reliable operations to support both budgeted and aspirational site targets.
  • Facilitate site participation in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) certification, third-party programme validation audits, and corrective action completion.
  • Support sustainability training and competency development, ensuring all requirements are met and properly documented.
  • When instructed to participate by corporate leadership, coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including sales, marketing, customer service, public relations, and community engagement teams, to communicate the site’s sustainability story, report progress, and foster positive relationships.

 

Engagement & Communication:

  • Participate in site and corporate initiatives to reduce post-consumer end-of-life impacts from material production and disposal.
  • Support management system reporting within authorised web-based platforms, ensuring timely corrective action tracking and resolution.
  • Coordinate signage and communications to enhance site-wide sustainability awareness and compliance.
  • Track and report community social engagement and local donations, in partnership with public relations and international relations departments.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.

 

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • BS in Environmental and Social Sustainability (ESS), Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field from an accredited university is required.
  • Advanced Degree is preferred. 

 

ESSENTIAL WORK EXPERIENCES:

 

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting Sustainable Development efforts, with particular focus on Operational Sustainability or Strategic CSR (preferably in a manufacturing setting).
  • Experience with Sustainable Reporting and Metrics calculation to include familiarity with GRI, ISO, pLCA, IPCC, GHG Protocol, etc.
  • Experience with third-party validation programming and audits, relative to sustainable development activities.
  • Experience with web-based customer-facing survey and reporting platforms, to include CDP, THESIS, ECOVADIS, etc.
  • Experience in delivering and/or maintaining Management Systems, with detailed knowledge on risk analysis and target/objective setting.
  • Experience in facilitation and completion of innovative projects focused on resources conservation and/ or sustainable development goals.

  • Knowledge and understanding of complex steam, power, energy systems and process unit operations, and how these relate to a manufacturing process.

TRAVEL

 

  • Up to 10%; travel will be infrequent and based on the needs of the business.

 

SALARY RANGE/COMPENSATION 

 

  • $106,500 to $156,500
  • The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and prior experience.
